Explore the Nordic wilderness – accessible adventures for all.
From Sånninggården, you’ll find hiking options for everyone — from gentle riverside walks with minimal elevation to steeper trails that quickly take you up to the open mountain plateau.
From our guesthouse, you can easily reach the Artfjäll mountain range — ideal for both summit hikes and scenic ridge walks. Across the road lie Björnberget and Dalåvie, offering a variety of hiking opportunities. You can also access the renowned Kungsleden trail from nearby Klippen.
Dalåvie, standing at 1,337 meters above sea level, is a flower-rich mountain offering stunning views. The trail begins at Sånninggården guesthouse — follow the red markers up to the edge of the mountain plateau. From there, the path is partially marked with cairns leading to the summit. The distance to the top is approximately 5 km.
Björnbergsstigen offers a slightly steeper hike, best started from the same road as the Dalåvie trail. Once on the mountain plateau, follow the partially cairned path westward along the ridge. The descent can be tricky to spot at first — keep an eye out for red trail markers on the trees. The downhill section is steep. The total distance is about 4 km, ending roughly 500 meters west of Sånninggården.
Other suggested day hikes include:
The flower-filled mountain Gieravardo begins at the parking area in Portbron.
Nuolpen/Drottningleden is a scenic trail that runs between Laisaliden and Hemavan.
Ruttjebäcken — more information further down the page.
Atoklinten — more information further down the page.
Canoeing on the Ume River
The Ume River below the cliffs offers easy paddling, ideal for a relaxed canoe trip. Further downstream, there are smaller tributaries that can be paddled upstream. Bring some snacks and make a few scenic stops along the shore as you go.
The distance from Klippen to Hemavan is approximately 4 km. There is one portage point past a small rapid, where the canoe should be taken out on the left-hand side. The stretch where the canoe needs to be carried is about 200 meters.
Swim in crystal-clear waters
When the sun warms the mountain slopes around Hemavan, few things compare to the feeling of dipping into clear, refreshing alpine water. Just a stone’s throw from Sånninggården, the Ume River winds its way through the valley — offering small natural swimming spots and calm stretches, perfect for an invigorating morning swim or a quiet moment in nature.
For those seeking something more secluded and playful, Rutjebäcken offers just that — a bubbling mountain stream with small waterfalls, smooth stones, and natural pools that invite both refreshment and laughter. Perfect for families with children or anyone who wants to bathe in their own little paradise.
The water may not be tropical, but it’s pure, clear, and infused with the spirit of the mountains. A swim here is more than just a refreshing dip — it’s a way to connect with the soul of Hemavan.
